A compact craw lure is a useful option when you want to fish slowly for perch around the bottom. This guide covers a simple way to rig and fish the DG Lures Ned Craw 64 (7 pack) on a Ned head.
What you’ll need
Take a Ned Craw, a suitably sized Ned jig head and your usual light lure-fishing tackle. Choose a hook that fits the lure’s compact body without crowding its claws and legs. Use enough weight to maintain contact with the bottom for the depth, wind and flow you’re fishing.
How to rig your Ned Craw
- Check the hook position. Hold the jig head alongside the lure, with the head at the plain end opposite the claws. Note where the hook point should emerge so the body sits straight.
- Thread the lure carefully. Insert the hook point into the centre of the plain end and feed the body along the hook, bringing the point out at the position you checked.
- Seat the body. Slide the lure gently up to the jig head or keeper. Avoid stretching or bunching the plastic.
- Check the finished rig. The body should sit straight, the hook point should be clear and the claws and legs should have room to move. Re-thread it if it looks twisted.
How to fish it for perch
Cast towards likely holding areas, let the rig reach the bottom, then start with small movements and pauses. Try a short lift or gentle drag, followed by a pause, rather than constantly retrieving. Vary the pause length and movement until you find a presentation that gets interest.
Keep an eye on your line during the drop and pauses. If it moves unexpectedly or you feel a bite, wind down and set the hook with a controlled lift.
Adjust to the water in front of you
In shallow, sheltered water, a lighter head can help you fish slowly. More depth, flow or wind may call for extra weight to keep contact. An exposed hook can catch weed and snags, so choose your casting spots carefully and adjust your rig if it keeps fouling.
